Florida's Turnpike

The project was initiated to upgrade the existing guide signing along the northern turnpike system from a rural type expressway facility to a suburban and urban signing format.  Over 50 bridge truss and cantilever truss structures and over 300 ground mounted guide sign structures for nearly 100 miles of Turnpike were included.  Overhead sign structures included drilled shaft and spread footer designs.  An extensive traffic control plan design was required including “rolling road blocks” or “pacing” for installation of overhead sign structures.

An innovative approach was used to inventory all existing signs.  Using custom developed software, a complete guide sign inventory was developed with specific sign record information and digitally stored photographs.  A crossroad signing report was prepared for over a dozen interchanges along the project. These studies evaluated positive guidance needs and safety concerns on the approaches to the interchanges.  The report included specific recommendations for improvements.  Construction assistance was provided through partnering.

The project was completed on time and received a Turnpike QC audit grade of 98%.
