This project included design and construction (Design Build) of a
new mast arm emergency
preemption signal. A double mast arm with
back to back signal heads was utilized for the W Street approaches
as an innovative approach to reduce the construction costs and avoid
utility conflicts and utility relocations. Since the location was
within a roadway curve lined with trees, the double arm provided
greater sight distance for mainline approaching vehicles. The
design/construction also included preemption coordination with
adjacent signals and an emergency flashing cantilever sign
structure. Preemption timings were developed and a manual push
button was provided in the fire station to activate the preemption
sequence. The design and construction was completed in two months.
The project also included utility coordination, geotechnical
investigation, topographical survey, structural design of mast arms
and subsurface utility investigation with ground penetrating radar.
CES was the lead design Consultant on this
project and Ingram Signalization, Inc. was the Construction
Contractor.
